Notation Software 101

When composing most classical and jazz music, music notation is essential to create professional-looking, standardized, and most importantly, readable scores. Notation software has replaced pencil and manuscript paper and has enabled composers to edit and share their scores more easily. In addition, built-in playback features have revolutionized the composing process and “democratized” composition; now, everyone can have their own virtual orchestra or band to allow for experimentation and instant feedback.

The primary notation softwares are Sibelius, Musescore, Finale, Dorico, and Noteflight. They differ significantly in terms of notation ability, ease of use, cost, accessibility, playback.
